How to Remove Background from Product Photos for Free
Marketplace pages are comparison views. Buyers scan dozens of thumbnails, and a busy background makes your product harder to compare against the rest. Removing it is one of the cheapest improvements you can make to a listing.
This guide covers a workflow you can repeat for every new product without design software.
Step 1: Shoot for removal, not for art
The cutout quality is decided before you upload anything. A few shooting habits make background removal much cleaner:
- Put the product on a surface with a clearly different tone from the product itself.
- Light the product from the front or side, not from behind. Backlight wraps around the outline and creates halos.
- Avoid shadows touching the product edges.
- Keep the camera parallel to the product so the outline stays sharp.
- Shoot at the highest resolution your phone or camera allows.
Step 2: Remove the background
Upload the photo to Change BG. The AI detects the product and removes everything behind it. Processing usually takes a few seconds.
You get a transparent PNG, not a JPG — transparency is the whole point at this stage.
Step 3: Check the edges at 100% zoom
Before you download, zoom in on the parts of a product that cause problems:
- Handles, straps and thin cables.
- Reflective surfaces such as metal, glass and foil.
- Transparent packaging.
- Hair-like fibers on textiles.
These are the areas where a cutout most often needs a small manual fix. Better to find it now than after you publish the listing.
Step 4: Place the cutout on the background you need
Most marketplaces expect a plain white background for the main image. Others accept transparent images. Whatever the rule is, you now have one master file that can be reused:
- White background for the main listing image.
- Brand color for campaign banners.
- Lifestyle scene for social media.
Keep the transparent PNG as your master. Export copies at the sizes each channel needs rather than re-processing the original every time.
Step 5: Match the marketplace rules
Background removal is only one part of the requirement. Each platform also defines image dimensions, aspect ratio, file size and sometimes the exact background color. Check the current specification for the platform you sell on before publishing — this tool does not resize or crop for a specific marketplace.
A note on quality
If the result looks rough, the fix is usually the source file, not the tool. A compressed screenshot, a photo taken with a wide-angle lens close to the product, or a product shot against a same-colored wall will all produce weaker edges. Retake or re-export the photo at full resolution first.
Summary
- Shoot against a contrasting background without backlight.
- Remove the background and download the transparent PNG.
- Inspect thin and reflective edges at 100% zoom.
- Place the cutout on white or brand backgrounds per channel.
- Export at the sizes your marketplace requires.
Done once, this takes a couple of minutes per product and gives you a consistent catalog instead of a folder of mismatched photos.
